Copper’s Rising Importance in the New Commodity Cycle

Historically, commodity super cycles unfold in a clear sequence: gold leads, followed by silver, then copper, and later PGMs such as platinum and palladium. Fertilizers and, finally, oil and gas rally toward the end of the cycle. If a broad commodity uptrend is underway, copper and PGMs tend to move early. However, once the cycle peaks, equities often face pressure, as seen in 1980, 2008, 2014, and 2022. A sharp rise in oil is usually the final warning signal, though such a move does not appear imminent. Investors may consider maintaining a 5–10% allocation to commodities through mutual funds, ETFs, or stocks.

Why Copper Matters?

• Backbone of Electrification: Copper is the most efficient conductor of electricity, making it indispensable for EV motors, charging
stations, solar inverters, and transmission lines—no alternative metal can replace it at scale without efficiency loss.
• EV Metal of Choice: Each electric vehicle requires ~80 kg of copper, nearly 4x more than an ICE vehicle. As India scales to 10 million
EVs by 2030, copper demand from autos alone rises sharply.
• Renewable Energy Link: Solar and wind installations require copper for cabling, grid integration, and storage. Even at a modest 2–
3 kg per MW, India’s 500 GW renewable target creates sustained multi-year demand.
• Energy Security Play: As the country moves away from fossil-fuel dependence, copper becomes a strategic asset—its demand
grows structurally regardless of economic cycles.

Key Growth Drivers

• EV Push: India targets 10 million EV sales by 2030, adding ~300,000 tonnes of copper demand every year.
• 500 GW Renewable Goal: Massive grid expansion and inverter capacity will steadily lift copper intensity across states.
• Energy Infrastructure: Charging networks, transformers, and transmission lines increase long-term structural demand.
• Global Deficit Risk: International supply shortfalls could reach ~500,000 tonnes, tightening the market further while India absorbs
~15% of incremental demand.

Price Outlook and Ways to Invest
Copper is projected to trade in the ₹1,150–₹1,300/kg range by 2026, offering potential upside of around 25% from current levels. Historically,
tight supply phases have produced strong gains, with MCX copper delivering close to 50% returns in 2021. Investors can access copper through
diversified commodity mutual funds, metal and mining equities, or thematic funds with meaningful exposure to the copper value chain.

Price Outlook and Ways to Invest

• SEBI allows mutual funds to invest in commodity derivatives through ETCDs, with a cap of 10% of net assets for hedging and
diversification.
• This cap limits the ability of funds to take concentrated positions in single commodities such as copper.
• Pure copper funds are difficult to structure due to strict physical delivery norms, expiry rules and liquidity considerations in base-
metal contracts.
• Gold and silver enjoy relaxed treatment as financial assets, making single-asset products easier to launch compared to copper.
• Investors looking for copper exposure can instead consider thematic or sectoral funds that naturally allocate about 25–30% to
copper-linked companies.
